After the two previous ballots did not afford him the necessary majority, Abdullah Gül has been elected president in the third round. He will take over from Sezer at 7.30 pm this evening.

The AKP MP Toptan from Zonguldak was elected Parliament Speaker in the first round with 450 votes. Kamer Genc withdrew his candidacy, and MHP candidate Toskay received 74 votes. Toptan said: All parties are my parties, all MPs are my MPs.
