Sociologist Beşikçi was sentenced to 15 months in jail because of an article in the periodical of the Contemporary Lawyers Association. Lawyer and magazine executive Şimşek received a TL 16,660 monetary fine.

Journalist Eker Convicted of "Propaganda"
A Diyarbakır court sentenced journalist Eker, Chief Editor of the Kurdish women magazine Renge Heviya Jine, to imprisonment of 2.5 years on the grounds of "spreading propaganda for an illegal organization". At the same time, Eker was released from detention.

Supreme Court Quashed Verdict for Acquittal of Kurdish Singer
The Court of Appeals quashed the verdict for Kurdish singer Tunç's acquittal of charges of "propaganda for an illegal organization". Tunç was initially tried for referring to the death of 17 MKP members in the course of a military operation in 2004 during a performance.

Acquittal of Journalists Durukan, Çakkalkurt, Koçali and Pekgöz
Milliyet newspaper employees Durukan and Çakkalkurt were acquitted of charges of "spreading propaganda for an illegal organization" on the grounds of one of their news items and so were Günlük daily officials Koçali and Pekgöz who were tried for the same reason.

Journalists Düzel and Adnan Prosecuted over PKK Interview
Taraf newspaper journalists Düzel and Demir are facing imprisonment of 7.5 years for an interview with executives of the militant Kurdistan Workers Party. Düzel rejected the charges of "propaganda for an illegal organization" and claimed to have made "political propaganda".

Journalist Çakar Faces 20 Years in Jail
The prosecution demanded imprisonment of 20 years for Gurbet Çakar, editorial manager of the Kurdish-Turkish Renge Heviya Jine women magazine. She is charged with spreading propaganda for the PKK and "committing a crime on behalf of the organization".

"Propaganda" Trial for Güney Magazine
Güney magazine editorial manager Özer is prosecuted over allegations of "spreading PKK propaganda" because of a story written by Mehmet Söğüt and a short picture story by Meray Ülgen. The first hearing is scheduled for 7 October.

The new prosecutor allocated to the trial against journalists Namık Durukan and Hasan Çakkalkurt followed his predecessor and demanded the conviction of the journalists once more. The case was postponed to 23 November.

54 Pro-Kurdish Mayors Acquitted of "Propaganda" Charges
The Diyabakır 5th High Criminal Court acquitted the 54 mayors who were tried for calling the militant PKK the "Kurdish opposition". The mayors had been facing prison sentences but the court followed the final plead of the prosecution.

Kurdish Journalist Kılınç Detained 5 Months after Conviction
Journalist Kılınç, former official of the Kurdish Azadiya Welat newspaper, was detained on 22 July. He had received a prison sentence of more than 21 years in February on the grounds of spreading propaganda for the PKK in some of the articles published in the paper.

Chief Editor of Women Magazine Detained since March!
Gurbet Çakar, editorial manager of the Kurdish-Turkish women magazine Rengê Hevîya Jinê, has been in detention for three months. A Diyarbakır court decided to extend her detention for at least 20 days. She had previously been sentenced to more than three years in jail.

Author Güler Sentenced on Behalf of Novel Characters
Author Mehmet Güler was sentenced to imprisonment of one year and three months under charges of "propaganda for an illegal organization" based on three fictional characters of his book "More difficult decisions than death". Publisher Zarakolu was acquitted.

Kurdish Politician Türk Tried here, Acquitted there
Ahmet Türk, former co-chair of the dissolved Democratic Society Party, is tried because he spoke Kurdish in parliament on the International Mother Language Day. At the same time, he was acquitted in a case related to his appreciation of the proclamation of a PKK ceasefire.

Kurdish Chief Editor Released after Defence in Kurdish
A court in Diyarbakır released Mehdi Tanrıkulu, editorial manager of the Kurdish Azadiya Welat newspaper, pending trial after 1.5 months in detention. Tanrıkulu was detained because he had insisted on presenting his defence in Kurdish.

DİHA Reporter Eskin Released after 5 Months in Detention
DİHA reporter Eskin was released pending trial after 5 months in detention. He was arrested when he was covering a demonstration against conditions of detention for imprisoned PKK leader Öcalan. Eskin was handcuffed when he was taken to the hearing.

"Peace Groups" on Trial for "Organizational Propaganda"
17 members of the "Peace Groups" that came from Iraq to Turkey in 2009 are facing trial for "propaganda for an illegal organization". The defendants dismiss the charges and refer to their freedom of thought. Another 30 trials are filed against each adult of both groups.

"Yürüyüş" Magazine Banned for One Month
An Istanbul Court decided to close the weekly Yürüyüş magazine because of alledged "propaganda for an illegal organization" based on an article entitled "We are on the way to Kızıldere". The 22nd issue of the magazine was confiscated. An investigation into the editorial manager was launched.

Kurdish Journalist Vedat Kurşun Sentenced to 3 Years

Political Propaganda in Kurdish and Children's Rights
The Parliamentary Constitutional Commission accepted political propaganda to be made in other languages than Turkish for the Elections Law. The proposal to decrease the election threshold to three percent was rejected. Children shall be prosecuted at juvenile courts only.

Another one month's publication ban was imposed on the Kurdish Azadiya Welat newspaper because of "propaganda for an illegal organization". Editor Kılınç received a 21 year's prison sentence recently; former editorial manager Kurşun faces imprisonment of up to 525 years.

Yet Another Trial for Pro-Kurdish Politicians Türk and Tuğluk
Banned politicians Türk and Tuğluk are now on trial regarding the hand-over of eight soldiers kept hostage by the PKK in 2007. The Ankara Chief Prosecution demands five years imprisonment each on account of a picture of PKK leader Öcalan at the place of the hand-over.

Kurdish Artist Rojda on Trial
Kurdish artists Rojda was taken into custody by reason of having spread "propaganda for an illegal organization" by performing a Kurdish song at a festival in Diyarbakır. Rojda is one of 160 artists invited by the Prime Minister to discuss the "Kurdish initiative".

Fehmi Kılıç, owner and editor-in-chief of Devrimci Hareket magazine, was convicted of spreading propaganda for two political organizations based on mentioning the organizations' names in two articles. Kılıç has to pay € 7,570 in compensation.

Aydınlık Magazine Banned for One Month
A court closed down Aydınlık magazine for 1 month and collected the latest issue because of alleged "Ergenekon terror organization propaganda" and making the prosecutor "a target for the organization". The IPI Local Committee and the Turkey Journalists Association sharply criticised the decision.
