Human Rights Association: 1154 Ill Prisoners, 402 in Serious Condition
İHD Prisons Commission has announced there are 1154 ill prisoners in Turkey’s prisons, 402 of which are in serious condition, and that inmates need to be granted the right to access healthcare.

1,914 Children Officially in Prison in Turkey
Responding to a parliamentarian inquiry of Pervin Buldan from HDP, Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ said 1,914 children are in prison in Turkey. Besides, 353 children stay with their prisoner or convict mothers. Children’s average period of detention is 110 days.

70 Prisons House “Sponged Rooms” in Turkey
Turkey's Justice Minister admitted that there were sponged rooms in 70 prisons. These rooms are notorious in press for its torture videos. Sponged rooms are being watched for 24 hours and the rooms’ toilets are not surrounded.

Gendarmerie forces captured 18 PKK member inmates who tunneled their way out from Bingöl M Type Prison. They were unarmed when captured, Interior Minister Güler said.

"Right to Conversation” Still Not Fully Exercised in F–Type Prisons
The Istanbul branch of the Contemporary Lawyers Association has spoken with 200 inmates in five prisons. According to their report, there are problems regarding the right to health; the complaints of the prisoners are being swept under the carpet, arbitrary disciplinary punishments violate basic rights.

IHD 2009 Report: 24 Deaths in Prisons in 1 Year
According to the annual report of the Human Rights Association, 24 people have died in Turkish prisons in the last year. 11 people died of illness, 3 people committed suicide, 4 were killed. The Association received 2,640 applications in 2009, 397 because of torture and mal-treatment.

Mainly Kurdish inmates are protesting rights violations, such as arbitrary ban on publications in Kurdish. The hunger strike entered its 39th day. Rights defenders urge the government to act, warning that four inmates' health is deteriorating.
