A court in the Aegean province of İzmir sentenced university student E.Ç. to five months in prison on the charge of “intentionally injuring a civil servant” for throwing an egg at European Union (EU) Minister and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bağış. The court later suspended the sentence.

Two Trials for Singing Kurdish Folk Songs
Raziye Kızıl (Gazin), faces two trials because of Kurdish folk songs. The Kurdish lyrics in the police records were supposedly translated incorrectly. The court did not accept the related objection and sentenced her to one year in jail. The second trial carries a five-year prison threat.

Special operations police officer Serkan Akbulut was handed down a life sentence for killing Emrah Gezer because he sang a Kurdish song. The sentence was then mitigated to imprisonment of 19 years and 5 months due to "unjust provocation".

The Istanbul 12th High Criminal Court sentenced publisher Abay to almost 19 years imprisonment on charges of managing the MLKP organization. Former Atılım newspaper chief editor Duman was handed down a life sentence. The decision was taken to the Court of Appeals.

The Diyarbakır 5th High Criminal Court handed down a prison sentence of six years and nine months to journalist Ozan Kılıç, former concessionaire of the Azadiya Welat newspaper. Kılınç was charged with "spreading propaganda for an illegal organization".

Charges of "propaganda for the PKK" lead to the conviction of writer Güler and publisher Zarakolu based on the book "The KCK file/Global state and Kurds without a state". Güler received a prison sentence and Zarakolu a monetary fine despite the prosecutor's plea for their acquittal.

Dicle News Agency reporter Yıldız and Güneydoğu Ekspress reporter Dayan were each sentenced to almost eight years in prison together with another 23 defendants who attended a demonstration in 2008. Both journalists said they followed the event for professional reasons.

Kurdish Folk Singer Sentenced after Appeal
A Malatya court sentenced Kurdish folk musician Tunç to one month imprisonment on the grounds of his statement at a festival and postponed the pronouncement of judgement. The Court of Appeals had quashed the first verdict of the local court for Tunç's acquittal.

Writer Nevin Berktaş Convicted - Deduction Dismissed
Writer Nevin Berktaş received a ten-month prison sentence because of her book on her time in prison. Due to a mistake, she had previously been imprisoned for more than 5 years too long. Her request to take this time into account accordingly was dismissed. She filed an appeal.

Ruken Yetişmiş, Mayor of Yüksekova in south-eastern Turkey, went to jail after the 6-month postponement of her sentence elapsed on 5 December. She will probably be released after 7 months and 10 days. The Kurdish politician considers her sentence a "political" punishment.

HaberinYeri.com website official Büyükçakır received a prison sentence on the grounds of a reader comment posted on the site. The comment referred to the statement that President Gül supposedly descended from an Armenian family. Büyükçakır will file a complaint.

8th Trial for Journalist Saymaz - 70-year Sentence Impending
Radikal newspaper reporter Ismail Saymaz will be tried for his article "Love games in Ergenekon" and faces imprisonment of 11.5 years. The 1st hearing is scheduled for 2011. This is the 8th case filed against Saymaz who faces prison sentences of a total of 70 years.

Kurdish Journalist Kılınç Detained 5 Months after Conviction
Journalist Kılınç, former official of the Kurdish Azadiya Welat newspaper, was detained on 22 July. He had received a prison sentence of more than 21 years in February on the grounds of spreading propaganda for the PKK in some of the articles published in the paper.
