ECHR Rule Two Verdicts Against Turkey
The European Court of Human Rights ruled against Turkey in two cases less in a week, ordering the Turkish state to pay Ahmet Sami Belek, Evrensel Daily Newspaper owner, and Murat Çelik, lawyer, a total of 23,320 Euros.

ECHR Upheld Decision on Roma Book and Dictionaries
The European Court of Human Rights upheld the decision that the book "Gypsies in Turkey" did not constitute a violation of the right to respect for private and family life. Mustafa Aksu had previously appealed the decision on behalf of the Roma Associations.

Monetary Fine for Turkey from Strasbourg
Yunus Aysu, found guilty by Turkish courts of membership in the Hizbullah, won his case at the European Court of Human Rights. The Turkish government is to pay € 19,000 in compensation on the grounds of multiple violations of the European Convention on Human Rights.

For the first time, the European Court of Human Rights sentenced Turkey for a breach of Article 9 on freedom of thought, conscience and religion. Applicant Erçep's lawyer Alsancak said the verdict manifested the right to conscientious objection in Turkey.

The Turkish government is to pay applicant Derman € 43,000 in compensation due to ill-treatment in police custody, the European Court of Human Rights decreed. Applicant İçen will receive a compensation of € 15,000 because she was tried as a civilian at a military court.

15,200 Files against Turkey Pending at ECHR
In 2010, a total of 15,200 applications filed against Turkey were pending before the European Court of Human Rights. Only Russia has more files pending. Turkey is the country with the highest number of convictions regarding violations of rights at the ECHR.

Turkey Convicted of Restricting Defence in Kurdish
The ECHR saw a violation of the right to a fair trial in the case of Sultan Şaman who was not allowed to see a lawyer or a translator when she was in police custody. Şaman was convicted of "membership in the PKK" by a domestic court. Turkey has to pay € 1,800 in compensation.

Imprisoned Writer Berktaş Wins at ECHR
"Hücreler" - 'Prison Cells' is the title of the book that brought writer Berktaş to jail. Berktaş now won her case at the ECHR and Turkey was sentenced to a fine of € 15,000 in compensation. The same amount has to be paid to publisher Çamyar.
