Support for Detained Journalists Does not Abate
The Freedom for Journalists organized a demonstration in Ankara with their demands to "release detained journalists from prison" and "amend laws that restrict press freedom and freedom of expression.

Appeals against Detention of Journalists Rejected
The appeals against the detentions of journalists Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener were rejected by court. Both were arrested on 6 March in the scope of the Ergenekon investigation. The decision does not mention a concrete reason. Turkey is facing national and international criticism.

Letter of Detained Journalist Şık to bianet
Journalist Ahmet Şık, detained in the Silivri Prison for more than a week now, wrote a letter to bianet and described his daily routine at prison. He also wrote about the reasons for his arrest: "I was arrested because I am a journalist, because I do journalism".

Thousands of People Demonstrate for "Freedom for Journalists"
Thousands of people demonstrated against the arrest of journalists Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener in Taksim in the centre of Istanbul on Sunday. This was the second protest march for the detained journalists.

International journalism and human rights organizations condemned the arrests of journalists Şener and Şık. The freedom of expression organization IFEX called for the release of the journalists and for sending appeals to Justice Minister Ergin by fax and mail.

"Should Evidence Exist at all, It Has to Be Revealed!"
Tora Pekin, lawyer of arrested journalist Ahmet Şık, claims that both the investigation about his client and his arrest lack concrete evidence. Otherwise, the way the file is handled by the prosecution would constitute a violation of the right to defence, Pekin said.

Journalists Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener Arrested
Journalists Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener were arrested by an Istanbul court on duty on Sunday because of their alleged affiliation to the Ergenekon terrorist organization. Journalists protested the arrests in front of the courthouse and blocked the road with a sit-down strike.

After eleven people, mostly journalists, were taken into custody under the Ergenekon investigation, the Turkish Journalists Association warned that "crimes of thought are on the rise again". The Contemporary Lawyers Association sees a fair trial endangered.

Many journalists were taken into police custody in the scope of the Ergenekon investigation after police raids on their homes and offices, among them journalists Ahmet Şık and Nedim Şener. The latter one recently claimed that he received according threats.
