'General Culture' Course Books: Girls at Home, Boys Out and About
A research into course books for 'general culture' lessons conducted by Eğitim Sen showed that girls are mainly represented in the environment of their mothers and other adults, at school or at home showing passive behavior and dependency, while boys are depicted as independent and active.

Acquittal of Radio Journalist Öziç Took 6 Years
After 6 years the Adana 5th Civil Court of First Instance acquitted radio journalist Öziç. He was on trial under charges of "humiliating " the Turkish parliament for his criticism against Turkey's joining the US invasion in Iraq.

141 Official Arrests and 2 Detentions after 2 Days of Clashes
According to information obtained from the Contemporary Lawyers Association, most of the protestors detained during the demonstrations against IMF and World Bank were assaulted in police vehicles. Many people sustained bruises and swellings. 27 people arrested on the second day were still not released although 24 hours had already elapsed.

Thousands of colourful children books from Sweden are dispersed among Turkish schools. At the first stage of the project, the Turkish translations of 10 books have been published. They will be distributed to schools in Ankara, Istanbul, Bursa, Çanakkale, Mardin, Şanlıurfa and Trabzon.

Second Day of Clashes in Istanbul - Bigger Police Brutality, Further Arrests
The Police interfered with tear gas and tinted water when members of the Alliance Against IMF-WB tried to gather in the district of Pangaltı. 25 people were arrested. Clashes occured between the demonstrators and the police.

Turkey ranks on position 79 in the UNPD's Human Development Index. Concerning social gender equality the country slips down to rank 125. The per capita income is high but this is not reflected in the progress of community life.

Police Force against IMF-WB Protestors - 200 People Arrested
About 2000 people wanted to participate in a demonstration against IMF and World Bank starting on Taksim Square in Istanbul. The police intervened with tear gas, tinted water and water cannons. Clashes occurred in a number of neighboring districts.

Engin Çeber Murder Case: Long and Winding Trial Road
Because of missing voice records the 7th hearing of the Engin Çeber murder case had to be repeated. Detained defendants Karaosmanoğlu and Aksu reiterated their statements. Lawyer Tanay is concerned about a fair trial. Some crucial statements made in the previous session are still missing. The case is postponed till 16 November.

Access Denied to LGBT Social Networking Sites
Access has been blocked to LGBT social networking sites galibe, haydigayri and shemaleturk under accusations such as prostitution, obscenity or child abuse according to law article 5651. The site administrators were no informed about the decision and spoke of a "homophobic mentality".

Perilous Police Attack for Sitting in a Park
A police officer from Avcılar (Istanbul) is accused of heavily assaulting university student Güney Tunay because he did not leave a park as ordered by the police. After Feyzullah Ete died in a similar incident two years ago, Tunay fighting for his life in hospital.

Crucial Evidence Deleted
Radio records of the day the police shot at Gerçek have been destroyed. Lawyer Tanay claims that those records were to be saved by the prosecutor a long time ago. The court rejected the acquittal of Gerçek. Tanay: "The child who is the victim is continued to be trialed as a defender". The case is adjourned till 12 February.

Lawyer Eren Keskin, actor Murat Batğı and writer Edip Polat were handed a 1 year prison sentence for using the terms "Kurdistan" and "Kurds". Furthermore, they were deprived of all civil rights.

Amendments in Anti-Terror Act not Sufficient to Protect Children
According to the Justice for Children Group 6 articles of the Anti-Terror Law and 2 articles of further Laws should be amended. Regarding Minister Çiçek's announcement children can still be handed long prison sentences. There will be no abatement for sentences longer than 3 years.

14 Suspects "Sentenced" to 10 Months Detention

Prosecutor as Lawyer for Festus Okey
In the court case regarding the murder of refugee Okey joint plaintiffs were not accepted. Rights Organizations are not able to obtain a mandate from the refugee's family in Nigeria. Lawyer Tanay and Dalkıran from hYd stress that Okey's lawyer is actually a prosecutor who has not requested anything from the court so far.

One More Trial for Taraf Newspaper upon "Aktütün" News
The prosecution is demanding prison sentence of 10 years for "Taraf" journalist Mehmet Baransu. He is accused of publishing records about the PKK raid on the Aktütün Police Station. The case begins on 18 November. Baransu: "If the General Staff spreads the news is not a crime - is it a crime if it is me who spreads it?"

Police Raid of DTP Mayor Şahin's Home
After an according statement of a detained person the police searched DTP Mayor Edibe Şahin's home in Tunceli for PKK documents. Some people were arrested during another raid of the Municipality guesthouse. Hundreds of DTP members protested.

Court Requested to Bring in DTP MPs by Force
The court decided to bring in DTP members Emine Ayna and Selahattin Demirtaş by force and to issue a new notification for Ahmet Türk. Prof. Dr. Kaboğlu suggested to solve the problem of the MPs immunity by the removal of article 14 concerned with an exception for "terror crimes".
