Mehmet Aslan, a reporter for Mezopotamya Agency (MA), has been detained in a house raid in İstanbul as part of an investigation launched by the Antalya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Rezan Epözdemir, the attorney of the Gültekin family, has indicated that the court board is trying to reduce the sentence of the defendant due to unjust provocation and demanded recusal. The next hearing will be held on February 15.

The Health Ministry has announced that Turkey’s COVID-19 death toll has risen to 21,685. While 197 people have died of the virus in the last 24 hours, the number of new cases has been announced as 13,695 and the number of daily tests over 180 thousand.

According to a recent report released by the Tigris-Euphrates Journalists’ Association (DFG), 79 journalists were detained, 24 journalists were arrested and 43 journalists were sentenced to 150 years, 15 days in prison in total in 2020.

Students have gathered in the South Campus of Boğaziçi University in İstanbul and protested the appointment of Prof. Bulu, also a former MP candidate for nomination from the ruling AKP, as the University President. Police have intervened into the protest.
