Former Editor-in-Chief Eren Keskin and former Managing Editor Reyhan Çapan of the shut-down Özgür Gündem daily newspaper have appeared before a judge for the daily’s March 10 issue.
Testifying over charges of “Promoting crime and criminals” and “[illegal] organization propaganda”, Keskin said “I believe that freedom of thought and expression is limitless unless it threatens other people. This newspaper is under crackdown because of freedom of expression. Today is the anniversary of the death of Musa Anter, the oldest writer of this newspaper. His killer still couldn’t be found.
“I don’t accept the charges. These are the reports that are published everywhere. We don’t know anything since all of the daily’s documents were seized”.
The hearing has been adjourned to December 29.
Keskin and Çapan have been each sentenced to 3 years and 9 months in prison on the charge of “terror organization propaganda”.
A large number of investigations launched into Keskin and Eren are ongoing. (EA/TK)
