Turkey Journalists’ Organization (TGC), Turkey Journalists’ Union (TGS), Progressive Journalists Association (ÇGD), Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK) Press, News Union and International Press Institute Turkey (IPI Turkey) have come together together within the Campaign “Freedom for News” run for releasing the arrested journalists.
Cumhuriyet daily’s Editor-in-Chief Can Dündar and its Ankara Representative Erdem who are going to have their first hearing on March 25, TGC President Turgay Olcayto, TGS President Uğur Güç, DİSK Press President Faruk Eren, Freedom for Journalists Platform term spokesperson and Ankara Journalists’ Organization President Ümit Gürtuna, News Union Branch No. 5 President Engin Başçı, IPI Turkey Representative Kadri Gürsel, Elisabeth Olin from PEN International, Barry White and Mehmet Köksal from IFJ and EFJ, Michelle Trimborn from European Center for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Secretary General Christophe Deloire have attended the panel held in TGC Burhan Felek Conference Hall as speakers.
Noting that the trial of Dündar and Gül had been a very critical case with regards to the independence of judiciary and freedom of press in Turkey, the speakers have pointed out to the dangers caused by violations of freedom of expression and have demanded freedom for all arrested journalists.
