At least 167 workers were killed on the job in May, the Health and Safety Labor Watch (İSİG) has announced.
In the first five months of the year, at least 646 workers were killed on the job, according to the İSİG reports.
Among the killed workers, 563 were paid workers (workers and civil servants) and 83 were working on their own behalf (shopkeepers and farmers).
Only 23 (3.56 percent) of the killed workers were union workers, whereas 623 were not unionized.
Thirty-eight of the killed workers were refugees, with 16 workers from Syria, eight from Afghanistan, four from Uzbekistan, three from Iran, and one from each of Belarus, Indonesia, Russia, Pakistan, Serbia, Turkmenistan and Ukraine.
Fifteen child workers were killed in five months; three of them were younger than 14. Forty-three of the workers were older than 65.
The highest number of deaths occurred in the 18-27 (322) and the 51-64 (143) age groups.
Construction (118), agriculture and forestry (103), and transportation (76) were the sectors with the highest number of deaths. (TY/VK)
