A Turkish court convicted 5 defendants including three from Coal Institute of Turkey to prison sentences from 5 to 10 years for charges related to the death of 30 miners in the northern province of Zonguldak in 2010.
The incident dates back to May 17, 2010 when a methane explosion left 30 workers dead in a mine operated by Coal Institute of Turkey (TTK).
On the 16th hearing, Zonguldak 2nd High Criminal Court closed the case with 28 defendants, prison sentences as follows: Project owner Halim Köse and Project Advisor Kadir İpek (10 years),
TTK Vice General Manager İsmail Güner (6 years 3 months), Karadon Institute Vice Supervisor Yusuf Ünlütürk and TTK Construction Estate Chairman Mustafa Küçük (5 years).
The court also issued a travel ban for 5 defendants within judiciary controls. The remaining defendants, on the other hand, were acquitted. (NV/BM)
