11 DTP Executives Arrested
Diyarbakir court arrests 11 executives of pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party including provincial chairman Avci after police storm party headquarters in Siirt. Politicians accused of aiding the outlawed PKK organization and conducting propaganda.
A Diyarbakir court has placed 11 executives of the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (DTP) under arrest following an August 31 police raid on the party headquarters in nearby Siirt province. Provincial Chairman Murat Avci was also among those sent to prison.
After the detained politicians were taken to the Diyarbakir High Criminal Court from Siirt, they were remanded to prison accused of aiding the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and conducting organizational propaganda.
The raid was conducted after a hunger strike was launched at the Siirt DTP headquarters in protest of a 20-day cell confinement penalty imposed on PKK's imprisoned leader Abdullah Ocalan who is being held at a special military prison on Imrali Island.
Searching the premises for approximately 5 hours, police seized a number of books and documents alongside placards and posters. The 11 DTP executives were then detained on grounds of possession of illegal documents. (KO/II/YE)
