PKK Ceasefire to be Terminated on 31 October?
The lawyers of imprisoned PKK leader Öcalan and Kurdish politician Tuğluk will not be able to see Öcalan before the announced end of the ceasefire on 31 October due to heavy weather conditions and a public holiday. They will apply for a meeting on 1 November.

Court Dismissed Request for Defence in Kurdish
The Diyarbakır 6th High Criminal Court rejected the request of the KCK trial defendants for the permission to present their defence in Kurdish as their mother tongue. The 7,500-page indictment will not be read out as a whole but in a summarized version.

58 Percent Said "Yes" to Constitutional Reform Package
99 percent of all ballot boxes were opened by 8.30 pm on Sunday night (12 September). The referendum on the constitutional amendments was approved by 58 percent of all votes counted by then, 42 percent voted against the package with a turnout of voters amounting to 77 percent.

Rights Organizations 3 Years ahead of Foreign Minister
Foreign Minister Davutoğlu recently spoke about efforts for legal amendments regarding freedom of expression cases at the ECHR. The Turkish Human Rights Foundation sent an according petition to the PM 3.5 years ago. The Anti-Terror Act, the Press Law and other regulations have to change.

On World Peace Day on 1 September, demonstrations for peace are being organized all over the country. Many of the organizations call for a peaceful solution of the Kurdish question to stop the armed conflicts. Northern and Southern Cyprus are celebrating together.

Işık Koşaner new Chief of General Staff
Genral Işık Koşaner took over the command of the Turkish Armed Forces as Chief of General Staff. In his inauguration speech he mentioned topics such as the Kurdish question or a professional army. Koşaner also addressed the media, calling for a more careful approach.

Journalist Zengin in Detention for another 6 Months
Journalist Zengin from the Işçi-Köylü newspaper appeared at court for the first time after one year in detention. The demand for her release was rejected "despite a lack of evidence and no connections with the other defendants", lawyer Altay criticized. The next hearing is in February 2011.

Reporter Threatened with Picture of Killed Journalist Dink
Evrensel reporter Topsakal received a threat via an e-mail which included a photograph of Turkish-Armenian journalists Dink after his assassination because of an article Topsakal wrote for the daily. He filed a criminal complaint.

Democratic Society Congress Co-Chair Türk stated that with the ceasefire announced by the PKK, the military operations should be stopped as well. He listed 5 steps to be taken to resolve the Kurdish problem, a "democratic autonomy is a project of voluntary unity".

The family of Hrant Dink, killed Turkish-Armenian journalist, won their case at the European Court of Human Rights. PM Erdoğan on the other hand refused permission for an investigation into alleged negligence of MIT members related to the murder.

President Gül received Hosrof Dink, brother of killed Turkish Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, in Istanbul on Friday (20 August). Related to the state's recent defence to the ECHR, judge Türmen called the state to apologize and admit a mistake.

The Doğan Yayın Holding lost its case regarding tax claims of TL 713 million for 2006 in one of their trials filed against a TL 4.8 billion tax fine imposed by the Ministry of Finance. The company is going to appeal.

"Friends of Hrant", a group of people struggling for the solving of the Hrant Dink murder case, demanded to investigate the people responsible for the government's defence made to the ECHR. The government had compared Dink to a neo-Nazi.

Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew advocated for a peaceful coexistence, saying, "We have no ulterior motives. We came to commemorate the Greek Orthodox people living in this area". The service was attended by hundreds of Greek Orthodox Christians from Turkey and abroad.

The PKK announced its decision for a period of "passive defence" from 13 August till 20 September. The constancy of the process is contingent on four conditions. The decision was influenced by the beginning of the moths of Ramadan amongst other factors.

Unrest against Kurdish Population in Hatay
Four police officers were killed in an attack on a police car in the south-eastern city of Dörtyolu; the party building of the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party was burned; shops owned by Kurds were demolished. Tension is still rising high in the region.

Peace Parliament: Pave the Way to a Solution, not to NATO
The Turkish Peace Parliament warned the government to refer to NATO for a solution of the Kurdish question. Spokesman Bakkalcı said, "The solution to the Kurdish question is not calling on NATO but negotiations by middlemen".

98 NGOs from Diyabakır call for an end of the military operations. They urge the PKK to stop their actions and demand the Parliament to prepare the legal grounds for a solution of the Kurdish question. The PKK waits for concrete steps before they will act accordingly.

In a declaration signed by the Parliamentary Group Chairs, the Turkish Parliament condemns the Israeli attack on aid ships for Gaza. The declaration demands a review of Turkish-Israeli relations, an international investigation, an official apology and compensation payments.

ISREAELI ATTACK ON AID SHIPS
Activists Arrived in Turkey
466 people who had been detained by Israel after an attack on aid ships heading for Gaza have arrived in Turkey. The bodies of 9 people who were killed in the attack were brought to Istanbul, all of them are of Turkish nationality. 17 injured activists are in Ankara.

Summer Recess for Trial on PKK Interview

Çeber Case: Life Sentences for 3 Prison Guards and Head of Prison
Three prison guards and the vice director of Metris Prison were convicted of "causing death by torture" in the case of Engin Çeber who died from torture in custody. They received life sentences. Three police officers and the prison doctor were punished as well.

73 out of 100 People Say Definite "No" to Torture
According to a research on "Othering and Discrimination in Turkey", 27 out of 100 people would approve of torture "in certain situations". Turkish Human Rights Foundation President Korur Fincancı claims that the according percentage among physicians amounts to 34 percent.
