Istanbul University Students Released
The students that were taken into police custody after a conflict at the Istanbul University were released on 3 January. Students from various organizations protested the incident and claimed, "This was not a conflict between left and right but a fascist attack".

Parliament President Calls for Contribution, Police Use Tear Gas
Members of the Dev Sağlık-İş socialist trade union were taken into custody and released later on when they tried to forward their request for a raise of the minimum wage. Union President Çerkezoğlu criticized, "On one hand they ask for the unions' contributions and on the other hand they attack the workers with tear gas".

Seven investigation and two trials were opened against Kurdish singer Ferhat Tunç by reason of speeches made during the run-up to the general election in June. Tunç claims his speeches were peaceful messages and did not intend to encourage the people to rebellion.

20,000 Containers Needed for Van to Counter Minus Degrees
People who lost their homes in the aftershock in Van last week now started to flee the cold and migrate to other cities. For the ones who stay it is very difficult to spend the winter in a tent. Only for the centre of Van 20,000 containers are needed.

Being a Journalist in the Disaster Zone
A 5.6 magnitude aftershock rocked the city of Van in south-eastern Turkey on 9 November. Two hotels hosting rescue teams and journalist were destroyed. Journalists who are working in the disaster zone described their working conditions in interviews with bianet.

None of the 12 detained defendants of the MKLP trial were released at the hearing on 13 October. The trial with a total of 24 defendants has been pending for six years. The defence lawyers pointed to contradictions and called the case a "complot".

The protest movement against the NATO Missile Shield in Kürecik in south-eastern Turkey was supported by 500 people who attended a demonstration in Istanbul on Sunday. The next protest action is set for 2 October in Kürecik.

An independent delegation joined by teaching staff, lawyers and physicians prepared a report on university students who were treated violently and arrested because they attended protest actions. The report revealed that violence is not being documented.

35 People in Custody, Tens of Thousands of People Protest
35 people were taken into custody in an operation regarding the investigation into the Union of Kurdistan Communities (KCK). About 20,000 people took the street for a protest march from Hakkari to Van. They continued the demonstration in a sit-down protest.

Readers of Alınteri Newspapers Arrested
Alınteri newspaper readers Serdar Ben and Mürüvvet Küçük and their friend Ulaş Ömür were arrested on charges of "membership in an illegal organization". In a press release issued at the İHD Istanbul branch, the Alınteri chief editor criticized the arrest.
