Discrimination and Racism in Turkey Fuel Concern
The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance published its report on Turkey. The commission criticized the impact of the Anti-Terror Law on Kurdish children, the situation of Roma and asylum-seekers and discrimination against minority religious groups.

Unionists in Northern Cyprus Protest PM Erdoğan
Prime Minister Erdoğan was protested for his harsh criticism of banners posted at a meeting in Northern Cyprus on 28 January. Trade union members were stopped by the police when they tried to submit a letter of protest to the Ambassador.

Policeman who Beat Juvenile Claimed Self-Protection
A police officer who beat and severely a juvenile with a rifle butt said to his defence that his "psychology was in bad condition". The trial was transferred to Isparta for security reasons. Lawyer Ermiş demanded a prosecution under torture allegations.

Court fully Protects Istanbul Police
In disregard to the ECHR decision, the District Administrative Court again refused permission for an investigation about officials from the Istanbul Police Directorate on duty prior to the murder of Turkish-Armenian journalist Dink. Lawyer Çetin: "This is incredible".

Turkey Takes the Lead in Europe in Violations in 2010
Turkey ranks first among the number of countries convicted for rights violations by the European Court of Human Rights in 2010. Russia is on second position of the list of 47 countries. Main reasons for Turkey's convictions were the fairness or the length of trials.

The 2010 report of the Human Rights Association revealed that deaths, injuries, setting villages on fire, torture and maltreatment are still continuing in the scope of the Kurdish question. Courts oppressed freedom of assembly and freedom of speech, the report claims.

An Istanbul court revoked the permission for a general search of people and their belongings at the entrance of Istanbul University. The court ruled that the search was contrary to the Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights.

US Ambassador Cable Proves Torture at Turkish Military Base
According to cables from 2006 published on WikiLeaks, Turkey issued permission to the USA to use the Incirlik Military Base for illegal interrogations of alleged "terror suspects" since 2002. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously denied such accusations.

Water Bills Issued in English but not in Kurdish
Deputy Prime Minister Çiçek remarked that signs in both languages, Turkish and Kurdish, can be put up at the market stalls, whereas a municipality is not allowed to issue their water bills in Kurdish. At the same time, the Didim Municipality offers services in English.

First Hearing of "Sledgehammer Coup Plan" Trial
The number of defendants in the "Sledgehammer" Coup Plan Trial heard in Silivri is down by one to 195 since one person was notified incorrectly. None of the defendants are detained. The case was adjourned to 28 December upon the request of a recusal of the judge.

Students Protest Ends in Riot
The police violently intervened against students who had gathered to protest the Higher Education Council (YÖK) during PM Erdoğan's meeting with university rectors. The students were exposed to tear gas and beating. 40 of them were taken into custody but released later on.

Verdict against Torture in Police Custody
The ECHR called on Turkey for the implementation of the Istanbul Protocol and the principles as defined by the CPT. The court sentenced Turkey to a €12,000 fine in compensation for Musa Doğan who applied to the international court because of ill-treatment in custody.
