The Human Rights Association (İHD) issued the Human Rights report 2010 for Turkey and graded the country with "0". İHD Istanbul Branch President Boğa said that a total of 480 people applied to the association during the past year because of rights violations.

PKK Should Apologize for Their Losses, Victims' Families Urge
On the 16. anniversary of the deadly bomb attack by PKK militants when prominent writer Onat Kutlar and archeologist Yasemin Cebenoyan lost their lives, relatives urged the PKK apologize: "We may only forgive should the guilty apologise," said Mumcu of the Social Memory Platform. "We are not here for revenge."

Protests 10 Years after "Return to Life" Operation
An explosion occurred in Diyarbakır during the demonstrations that marked the 10th anniversary of the violent "Return to Life" operation. Protestors all over the country demonstrated against the operation and the way the state dealt with it afterwards. The police intervened with tear gas and water cannons.

"Raise your voice" was one of the topics of the campaign against hate crimes by the Association for Social Change and the SayStop Initiative. The beginning of the campaign was marked by a symposium in Istanbul. Main aims are a draft bill and raising public awareness.

A Woman's Right and Obligation to Carry her Husband's Name
Sırma Oya Tekvar Geray opened a case in order to abolish her husband's surname and bear her maiden name only. The court dropped procedures in the first hearing. "No one can object to carrying her husband's surname since it is the right of a women", the court reasoned.

"We want free education, and we'll get it" was written on the banner posted by university students Tüzer and Yılmaz who have not been released in the second hearing of the related trial. 2 other students were taken into custody because they protested the court's decision.

The police violently intervened against students who had gathered to protest the Higher Education Council (YÖK) during PM Erdoğan's meeting with university rectors. The students were exposed to tear gas and beating. 40 of them were taken into custody but released later on.

39 gendarmerie officers are tried in the case regarding the "return to life" operation which left 30 people dead in Turkish prisons in 2000. 27 out of the 28 defendants that appeared at court claimed that they did not remember anything.
