‘Return to Life’ Judgement by ECtHR: How Women Were Burned Not Unveiled for 18 Years

The lawyers of the Return to Life trial complained to the HSYK because defendants have not been brought to court, statements were not taken for eight years, hearings are being continuously postponed and because a member of the court board fell asleep during a hearing.

Burnt Alive - No Chance to Surrender
A soldier who was on duty at the Bayrampaşa prison during the "Return to Life" operation confessed after 11 years, "The detainees wanted to get out of the burning cells and surrender but the doors were not opened, the fire brigade did not intervene".

Minister Gave Order for "Return to Life" Operation
Records proved that the order for the Return to Life operation came from the Ministry of the Interior. The same documents revealed that then Prisons and Arrest Stations General Manager Ertosun forwarded the order to the gendarmerie on the phone.

Officials Claim Lack of Information - Defendants Do not Remember
The disclosure of the "Storm" plan gave a new twist to the Bayrampaşa trial on the "Return to Life" operation. The then Minister of Justice Türk and the former Prisons General Manager Ertosun said they were not informed about the plan. The defendants claimed not to remember anything.

In the Bayrampaşa Trial related to the "Return to Life" operation, the gendarmerie declared that the private soldiers on trial were not on duty at the Bayrampaşa Prison at the time. Other information required by the court "could not be found".

Protests 10 Years after "Return to Life" Operation
An explosion occurred in Diyarbakır during the demonstrations that marked the 10th anniversary of the violent "Return to Life" operation. Protestors all over the country demonstrated against the operation and the way the state dealt with it afterwards. The police intervened with tear gas and water cannons.

Defendants Haven't Got a Clue...
39 gendarmerie officers are tried in the case regarding the "return to life" operation which left 30 people dead in Turkish prisons in 2000. 27 out of the 28 defendants that appeared at court claimed that they did not remember anything.
