The trial over the death of retired teacher Metin Lokumcu as a result of the tear gas used by the police during a protest demonstration continued with its third hearing at the Trabzon 2nd High Criminal Court today, February 18, 2022.

After 159 students were detained yesterday, Boğaziçi Solidarity made a call for protest in Kadıköy. While some students are detained on their way, police intervene against students with tear gas and plastic bullets in Kadıköy, taking several of them into custody.

The European Court of Human Rights reached a verdict on the case of Nergiz Izci, a peaceful March 8 demonstrator who was subjected to police beatings and pepper gas. Turkey was ordered to pay 20,000 euros to Izci.

ECHR Condemns Turkey Regarding Use of Pepper Gas in Peaceful Protest
Turkey is to pay 11500 euro to Ali Güneş for violating Article 3 of the convention on human rights. Güneş was sprayed with pepper gas in close range and forcefully taken under custody in 2004.
