Political Prisoners Punished for Labour Day Slogans
63 detainees and convicts of the Sincan Prison were punished for chanting "pointless slogans" on 1 May. The inmates had celebrated Labour Day by singing marches and chanting slogans. As a result, they were banned from communication and visits for 1 month.

A group of journalists urged their colleagues to join the 1 May demonstrations in Istanbul to raise their voices for the release of arrested journalists Şık and Şener. The journalists will accompany the socialist trade union DİSK with their call for press freedom and fundamental rights.

22,000 Policemen in Taksim for a 'Peaceful 1 May'
The Governor of Istanbul engaged more than 22,000 policemen for 1 May. Union representatives will be at the check points. Six union confederations will gather at Taksim square after a converging demonstration. The whole area will be closed to traffic.

Workers Demand Taksim Square on 1 May
The DİSK and KESK trade union confederations have announced that they will gather in Taksim Square on Labour Day, despite bans and clashes with the police in previous years. Prime Minister Erdoğan has ordered that 1 May be a public holiday.

Unions ended the May Day activity in Şişli following the excessive violence by the police forces. DİSK president Çelebi said that “Our friends ended up in the hospitals. They used all kinds of violence. Whole Turkey became Taksim.”

The DISK lawyer Okcan indicates that the court rulings disprove the governor Güler. “Taksim is open to the soccer celebrations, police marches, tulip festival and to the new year festivities, but closed to the workers. He is trying to lower the participation by scaring people away.”

Unions Urge For Taksim Square, Government Says A Wreath Is Enough
PM Erdoğan says yes to a May Day press statement and a wreath-laying ceremony in Istanbul's central Taksim Square, but no to a meeting. The unions propose to enter Taksim only from one side. Çelebi from Disk says they do not want this square closed to them.
