Vakit to Pay Damages to Generals

The Vakit newspaper will have to pay a total of USD 40,500 in damages to 312 generals for an article titled, The country where those who do not have the capacity to become corporals have become generals.

According to the decision of an Ankara court, the "Vakit" newspaper will pay 2 billion Turkish lira (USD 1,300) in damages to each of the 312 generals for an article titled, "The country where those who do not have the capacity to become corporals have become generals."

The newspaper will separately pay 4 billion Turkish lira (USD 2,600) in damages to General Sener Eruygur, General Commander of the Gendarme, for another article.

The judge said all issues in the file had been investigated and accepted the requests of the 312 generals.

The court decided that a total of 624 billion Turkish lira (USD 40,500) would be collected from defendants Nuri Aykon, Harun Aksoy and Mehmet Dogan (Asim Yenihaber).

General Eruygur had sued the newspaper for an article titled, "Season to Fight Reaction is Open," by Asim Yenihaber.

Eruygur had said his personal rights were being attacked through this article. The court found the newspaper guilty and handed a fine of 4 billion Turkish lira to Aykon, Aksoy and Dogan.(BB/EA/YE)
