The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), Turkey's government agency commissioned with producing official statistics on the country, released its "Labor Force Statistics" for July 2020 today (October 12).
According to the TurkStat figures, the number of unemployed persons aged 15 years old and over decreased by 369 thousand to 4 million 227 thousand persons in July when compared with the same period last year.
The unemployment rate occurred as 13.4 percent with 0.5 percentage point decrease. Non-agricultural unemployment rate occurred as 15.9 percent with 0.6 percentage point decrease.
Employment rate: 43.5 percent
The TurkStat statistics have shown that the number of employed persons decreased by 1 million 254 thousand to 27 million 263 thousand persons in the period of July 2020 compared with the same period last year. The employment rate occurred as 43.5 percent with 2.9 point decrease.
In this period, the number of agricultural employment decreased by 361 thousand persons, industry decreased by 246 thousand persons and services decreased by 761 thousand persons while construction increased by 114 thousand persons.
According to the distribution of employment by sector; 19.4 percent was employed in agriculture, 19.6 percent was employed in industry, 6.1 percent was employed in construction and 54.9 percent was employed in services.
Labor force participation rate: 50.3 percent
The number of persons in the labor force realized 31 million 491 thousand persons with 1 million 622 thousand persons decrease in July compared with the same period of the previous year. Labor force participation rate was 50.3 percent with 3.5 point decrease.
The rate of unregistered employment: 32.7 percent
The ratio of persons working without any social security relating to the main job occurred 32.7 percent with 3.3 percentage point decrease in the period of July compared with the same period of the previous year.
The rate of unregistered employment realized as 20.1 percent with 3.1 percentage point decrease in the non-agricultural sector compared to the same period of the previous year.
Unemployment among the 15-64 age group
For the 15-64 age group, the unemployment rate occurred as 13.7 percent with 0.5 percentage point decrease and non-agricultural unemployment rate occurred as 16 percent with 0.6 percentage point decrease compared to the same period of the previous year.
In this age group, employment rate occurred as 48.3 percent with 2.7 percentage point decrease and labor force participation rate occurred as 55.9 percent with 3.6 percentage point decrease.
Youth unemployment: 25.9 percent
The youth unemployment rate among people aged 15-24 years realized as 25.9 percent with 1.2 percentage point decrease and the youth employment rate realized as 30.4 percent with 4.5 percentage point decrease.
In the same period, labor force participation rate realized as 41 percent with 6.8 percentage point decrease. The rate of neither in employment nor in education realized as 29.8 percent with 0.4 percentage point increase compared with the same period of the previous year.
Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate
Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate realized as 13.6 percent with 0.5 percentage point decrease. The number of unemployed persons decreased by 75 thousand to 4 million 207 thousand persons.
Seasonally adjusted employment rate realized as 42.6 percent with 0.8 percentage point increase. The number of employed persons estimated as 26 million 648 thousand persons with 540 thousand persons increase compared with the same period of the previous year.
Seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate was 49.3 percent with 0.7 percentage point increase. The number of labor force estimated as 30 million 855 thousand persons with 464 thousand persons increase.
According to the seasonally adjusted number of employment by sectors, employment in agriculture decreased by 28 thousand persons while industry increased by 57 thousand persons, construction increased by 111 thousand persons and services increased by 399 thousand persons. (SD)
