Two children lost their lives in fires caused by heating stoves in two separate incidents in Kayseri and Diyarbakır, according to reports by Anadolu Agency (AA).
In the incident in Gazi neighborhood, Diyarbakır, on Sunday (December 26), Doğan Gül, 10, tried to light up the heating stove using thinner while his father was at work. The child lost his life after accidentally igniting his clothes.
In Melikgazi, Kayseri, a fire broke out because of the heating stove in a flat on the 11th floor of a building on Tuesday. While all family members managed to escape, Umut E. 4, lost his life in the fire. Two people in the flat were hospitalized.
Heating costs
People increasingly use heating stoves due to increasing heating costs, according to the Deep Poverty Network. In an interview with bianet earlier this month, Selen Yüksel from the network said, "When poverty gets deeper, we see that several children are unable to access the rights necessary for an adequate standard of living such as healthy nutrition, a safe house, heating and medical needs.
"In 2021, 92 percent of the households that are a part of the Deep Poverty Network get warm by using heating stoves. We observe that this winter, families have much more difficulties in getting warm. As they cannot buy something to burn in the stoves, we receive more phone calls." (AÖ/VK)
