DİSK (Progressive Confederation of Trade Unions of Turkey), KESK (Confederation of Public Employee’s Trade Unions), TTB (Turkish Medical Association) and TMMOB (The Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects) have commemorated the ones who have lost their lives on May 1s in 1977, 1989 and 1996.
CHP (Republican People’s Party) MPs Ali Şeker and Kadir Gökmen Öğüt, ÖDP (Freedom and Solidarity Party) Chairperson Alper Taş and representatives of DİSK, KESK, TTB and TMMOB have attended the commemoration activities organized in Kazancı Yokuşu.
A call for mass participation to commemoration activities in Bakırköy has been made.
Beko: We need mass rally
The area of the commemoration activities has been surrounded by police to make a security corridor. The representatives of the four organizations have held speeches here.
DİSK Chairperson Kani Beko has announced that their decision to celebrate May 1 in Bakırköy only referred to this year.
“We have never forgotten the ones who have been massacred in Taksim. You all have been witnessing for nine months, especially since Ankara rally, how peace doves have been slaughtered.
Sub-contractors, precarity, violence, oppression
Beko has criticized the parliamentary speaker’s statements on secularity, reminded of Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu promising to employ the sub-contractors and urged the Prime Minister to keep his promise.
KESK Co-Chair Şaziye Köse has criticized that May 1 activities have been prohibited. TMMOB President Mehmet Soğancı has noted; “We are very determined to bring the heat of June to whole Turkey on this May 1”.
TTB Second President Raşit Tükel has noted that anti-democratic practices and pressures have increased and rights and freedoms have been restricted.
He has stated that besides commercialism, violence in health care and precarity, also the environment of oppression through investigations has intensified.
Mehmet Akif Dalcı commemorated in Şişhane
After leaving carnations in Kazancı Yokuşu, the group went to Şişhane where Mehmet Akif Dalcı had been shot to death by police in 1989.
DİSK General Secretary Arzu Çerkezoğlu talking on behalf of the four organizations has commemorated Mehmet Akif Dalcı and told that “May 1 1989 was milestone in the struggle for freedom in Taksim”.
The activities will proceed in Kadıköy where Dursun Odabaşı, Yalçın Levent and Hasan Albayrak have lost their lives.
