The Supreme Court of Appeals 16th Penal Chamber has overturned the verdict of a life sentence for journalists Ahmet Altan, Nazlı Ilıcak and writer Mehmet Altan.
The verdict said that Ilıcak and Ahmet Altan did not commit the offense of "violating the constitution" but "knowingly and willfully aided the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ)." It rejected their requests of release.
The court ruled for the acquittal of Mehmet Altan on the grounds that there is no sufficient and credible evidence.
İstanbul Regional Court of Justice 2nd Penal Chamber approved life sentences for the three defendants on October 2, 2018.
Mehmet Altan was released from prison on June 27, 2018. (AS/VK)
