Six journalists received prison sentences of 27 years and 3 months in total in September, the Turkish Journalists' Association (TGC) has stated.
According to the TGC's monthly "Price of the News" report, 49 journalists stood trial in 32 separate cases in nine provinces in a month.
Fourteen hearings were held in İstanbul and sx hearings were held in Diyarbakır.
In total, journalists faced two aggravated life imprisonment sentences and prison sentences of from 266 years, 4 months and 15 days to 649 years, 4 months and 15 days.
Three cases were completed in September while 29 were adjourned. In the completed cases, six journalists were sentenced to a total of 27 years and 3 months in prison, and five were acquitted.
New lawsuits were filed against four journalists, and new investigations were opened against six journalists.
Four journalists were detained
Four journalists were detained because of various investigations. They were released after giving their statements.
One journalist was sent to prison after their conviction became final. Two journalists who were remanded in custody were released.
At least eight journalists faced threats, attacks and obstacles.
Also, claims for damages were filed against three newspapers because of reports they published. The complainants demanded 100,000 lira (~11,200 USD) from each newspaper. (HA/VK)
