19th Educational Committee (Eğitim Şurası) under Education Ministry approved the removal of a class in hotel managements and tourism school related to “serving alcohol and preparing cocktails”.
Previously abandoned by another group commission on curricula, the aforementioned proposition upon the request of Eğitim Bir Sen Union. After the proposition, some other union members left the meeting. The proposition, on the other hand, has been approved.
“I don’t find it healthy for the future of our children. Those who are asked to serve alcohol are our children. I don’t think those who oppose this will necessarily want their children to serve alcohol either,” said Ahmet Gündoğdu, Eğitim Bir Sen Union Chairman who came up with the proposition.
Hotel managers, on the other hand, reacted to the decision. According to Hürriyet newspaper, Hotel Federations of Turkey Chairman Osman Ayık said the following:
“By removing this class, you may seem to respond the demand of those who want to have an education based on religion. But on the other hand, you are blocking the way for those who want to be educated this way. They could at least make this class as elective. By doing this, you are saying that students can only serve in dry restaurants.”
The government will make the decision
Drafted by the commissions, the reports will be put into vote on December around a general council and the approved decision will be submitted to the government as recommendations. (ÇT/BM)
