The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) released its report "Youth in Statistics, 2019" today (May 15). The report has shown that young population constitutes 15.6 percent of Turkey's total population.
According to the results of Address Based Population Registration System, while the total population of Turkey is 83 million 154 thousand and 997 in 2019, the young population at the age group of 15-24 is 12 million 955 thousand and 672. While males constitute 51.3 percent of young population, females constitute 48.7 percent of the poulation.
According to the population projections, the proportion of young population is expected to decrease to 14.8 percent in 2023, 14 percent in 2030, 13.4 percent in 2040, 11.8percent in 2060 and 11.1 percent in 2080.
According to the report, the proportion of young population in the total population of Turkey is higher than that the proportions of young population of 28 European Union (EU) member countries.
When the proportion of young population of 28 European Union member countries is analyzed, the country having the highest proportion is Southern Cyprus with 12.8 percent and the country having the lowest proportion is Bulgaria with 8.9 percent in 2019.
Highest rate of young population in Hakkari
The report has shown that Hakkari has the highest proportion of young population with 23.9 percent. This province is followed by Şırnak with 22.7 percent and Bayburt with 22.6 percent. The provinces with the lowest proportion of young population are Muğla with 12.6 percent, Balıkesir with 12.9 percent and İzmir with 13.2 percent, respectively.

Young people who moved out to study
According to the report, 411 thousand and 818 young people in the 18-24 age group have moved out of his/her province of residence to study at university. The proportion of these young people in the young population of the 18-24 age group is 4.4 percent. While this proportion for young men is 4.2 percent, it is 4.7 percent for young women.
Proportion of married young people
When young population is examined by legal marital status, it is seen that there is a significant differences between sexes. While 95.8 percent of young male population is never married, 4.1 percent of them is formally married and 0.1 percent is divorced, it is seen that 82.7 percent of young female population is never married, 16.8 percent of them is formally married and 0.5 percent of them is divorced in 2019.
Educational level
When the educational difference between spouses is examined in legal marriages, it is seen that 33.6 percent of young women are married with the men who have higher educational level than themselves while the proportion of young men who had higher educational level than their spouses was 18.7 percent in 2018. The proportion of young couples with the same educational level is measured as 45.8 percent in 2019.

Net enrollment rate in higher education on the decrease
In Turkey, while net enrollment rate in higher education in 2017/'18 educational year was 45.6 percent, this rate has decreased to 44.1 percent in 2018/'19 educational year. When net enrollment rate in higher education is analyzed by sex, while this rate for men has decreased from 44.0 to 41.9 percent, for women, it has decreased from 47.4 to 46.4 percent.
Unemployment rate is 25.4 percent for young people
According to the results of household labour force survey, while unemployment rate for young people was 20.3 percent in 2018, it has increased to 25.4 percent in 2019. While unemployment rate for young men was 17.6 percent in 2018, it is 22.5 percent in 2019. While this rate for young women was 25.3 percent in 2018, it is 30.6 percent in 2019.
The proportion of young people who take part in neither education nor employment in 2019 is 26 percent. While this rate is 18.3 percent for young men, it is 34.0 percent for young women.
Employment rate for young people is 33.1 percent in 2019. While this rate is 43.4 percent for young men, it is 22.6 percent for young women.

54.1 percent of employed young work in service sector
According to household labour force survey, while the employment rate of young people was 35 percent in 2018, it is 33.1 percent in 2019. When employment rate is analyzed by sex, while the employment rate of young men was 46.4 percent in 2018, it is 43.4 in 2019. While the employment rate of young women was 23.4 percent in 2018, it is 22.6 in 2019.
While young employees is analyzed by sectors, it is seen that 17.7 percent of young people are employed in agriculture sector, 28.2 percent in industry sector and 54.1 percent in service sector in 2019. It is also seen that while 15.7 percent of young men take part in agriculture, 33.4 percent in industry and 50.9 percent service sector, 21.7 percent of women part in agriculture sector, 17.8 percent in industry sector and 60.5 percent service sector.
Health as the first source of happiness for young
According to the results of life satisfaction survey, while the proportion of young people at the age group of 18-24 who declared that they were happy was 55.4 percent in 2018, it is 56.7% in 2019. This proportion is 50.0% for young men while it is 63.4 percent for young women in 2019.
According to the results of life satisfaction survey, health is the first value as a source of happiness for young people with 52.3 percent in 2019. This is followed by success with 24.2 percent and love with 15.1 percent.
When the source of happiness is analyzed by sex, health is the first value as a source of happiness for young men with 50.1 percent and it is followed by success with 28.3 percent and love with 11.4 percent. For young women, health is the first value as a source of happiness with 54.5 percent, and it was followed by success with 19.9 percent and love with 18.8 percent. (HA/SD)
