General Directorate of Security ordered 6000 portable batons in order to use at public security incidents. According to the news the batons known as 'iron batons' are produced by aluminum and steel.
These batons will not be given to riot polices forces; they will not be used at social events. These new batons are 20 cm when folded and it's easy to carry them at the waist thanks to their special covers. Consisting of three metal elements, these batons are around 60 cm when opened and they weigh 295 gram.
The steel batons are also used in US and some European Union countries and will be tested in İstanbul, Ankara and Izmir first.
They are more durable compared to polyurethane batons and it's being considered that they may create a psychological impact on the suspect due to their sound when opened. The security forces will attend a two-day training to learn hoe to use the batons. (AS)
