In Isparta Province early this year, a woman was reported to throw the chopped head of man who raped her. Publicly known as N.Y., the rape victim delivered a baby girl from her rapist this week.
N.Y. asked several times during her pregnancy for abortion, a demand denied by Turkish officials due to the official abortion limit of 20 weeks in pregnancy.
N.Y.'s said she will not bring up a child as a result of a rape, and asked for state foster care.
Ministry to name the baby girl
Until the procedures are completed, the baby girl will be held by state authorities and then sent to infant foster care, according to Tekin Atay from Turkish Habertürk newspaper.
"We are doing our best to take care of the baby. We will name her after consulting people from the governor's office," Yakup Kütük, a local ministry official in Isparta, said.
"I will always worry about that poor girl"
The rapist's wife, rumored to agree on mothering N.Y.'s child, told Vatan newspaper why she had to change her mind:
"My own children hold the baby girl responsible from the death of their father. 'If that baby never existed, our dad would be alive today,' they say. I had a serious talk with both of them. When I talked about intentions to mother the baby, they harshly protested. Other family members got involved to convince them, but it didn't work. I feel bad about that baby, but I had to give up on her. I was even planning to name her 'Cemre'. I never expected such a reaction from my children."
The wife said she received death threats from "N.Y.'s family: "I reported the threats to local authorities. I was told not to walk outside alone. I am trying not to leave my surroundings. I can't even go and see the baby girl because my life is in danger. I will always worry about that poor girl." (ÇT)
