A minibus with several refugees on board crashed into a wall in the district of Meriç in Turkey's northwestern province of Edirne earlier today (June 26). According to initial reports, 10 people have lost their lives and 30 others have been injured in the accident.
Carrying refugees to Meriç near Turkey-Greece border, the minibus lost control on the road and crashed into the wall of a shop. Several ambulances were referred to the scene of accident. The minibus had neither seats nor windows, it has been further reported.
Releasing a statement regarding the issue, the Governorship of Edirne has indicated that the minibus did not obey the stop warning of the gendarmerie and speeded away from the scene of incident. Shortly afterwards, it span out of control and crashed into a nearby store.
"In the Neighborhood of Büyük Doğanca in our Meriç district, our gendarmerie forces made a stop warning to a vehicle, getting suspicious of its situation. The vehicle did not obey the stop warning, speeded away and crashed into a store, running off the main crossroad in the center", the Governorship has indicated in its statement. (AÖ/SD)
