Speaking at the last Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Parliamentary Group today (September 5) before the National Elections in Germany on September 24, German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressed also the relations with Turkey and urged to keep channels of communication with Turkey open.
According to the report of Deutsche Welle, Merkel, pointing out to the deteriorating political situation in Turkey said "Yet Turkey is our NATO partner. Besides, the German citizens behind bars in Turkey should be helped.
Merkel said that the channels of communication should be kept open although the relations to Ankara were risky and tough. She added that she would meet her colleagues in the European Union (EU) to discuss the termination of EU membership negotiations with Turkey in October.
Increasing economic pressure on Turkey
Speaking at the TV election debate where she faced off her opponent Social Democratic Party of Germany's (SPD) candidate for the German Chancellorship Martin Schulz on Sunday (September 3) evening, Merkel had said that the economic pressure against Turkey might increase.
