In 2013, men killed 214 women and 10 children, raped/ attempted to rape 167 women and teenager girls, used violence against 241 women and teenager girls, harassed 161 women and teenager girls. |
According to the data based on reports in local and national newspapers and news agencies, a compilation made by bianet revealed that male violence left 28 women killed, 14 raped, 38 injured, and 39 sexually harassed in December 2014.
In 2014, men killed 281 women, raped/attempted to rape 112 women and teenager girls, battered 561 women and teenager girls, harassed 142 women and teenager girls.
Murder
In December, men killed 28 women, 3 men, 2 children and 1 infant across Turkey.
28.5 percent of women were slain for seeking a divorce or turning down compromise offers.
46 percent of women (13 cases) were killed by their husbands. The percentage of ex-husbands, lovers and ex-lovers turned out 71 percent.
Petpatrators were identified as follows: husband (13), ex-husband (5), son (3), lover (1), ex-lover (1), friend (1), friend’s husband (1), relative (1), brother (1), neighbor (1).
57 percent of murders were committed with knives. Killing methods were the following: Knives (16), pistol (7), rifle(2), axe (1), strangling (1). Another case where the women was killed by being thrown into a river didn’t receive media coverage.
Following the incidents, 6 men surrendered, 1 man committed suicide and 1 attempted suicide.
The murderers were aged between 27 to 65 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 33 to 63.
Most murder cases were reported in Ankara and Istanbul.
Murder cases were reported in the following cities: Adana, Ankara (4), Antalya, Aydın, Burdur, Bursa, Diyarbakır, Düzce, İstanbul (4), İzmir (3), Karaman, Kocaeli, Konya, Kütahya (2), Mersin, Rize and Van (3).
Rape
In December, 14 rape cases appeared on the media.
57 percent of rape perpetrators were strangers to women. On the other hand, a non-Turkish citizen was allegedly seized by policemen during a visa interview and raped.
43 percent of women were forced to prostitution.
57 percent of women (8) were raped under abduction. Other rape venue were listed as apartment (4) and on the street (2).
Rape perpetrators were identified as stranger (8), relative (2), police (1), friend (1), lover’s son (1).
The rapists were aged between 26 to 45 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 17 to 83.
Rape cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (3), Afyon, Ankara, Antalya, İstanbul (2), Malatya, Tekirdağ, Trabzon, Yalova and Zonguldak (2).
Battery-Assault
In December, men battered 38 women across Turkey.
10.5 percent of women were battered for either seeking divorce/breakup.
55 percent of women were subjected to male violence by their husbands.
Violence perpetrators were identified as husband (21), father (5), brother (3), son (2), ex-lover (2), son-in-law (1), ex-husband (1), co-worker (1), daughter’s ex-lover (1), lover (1),
While 65.7 percent of male violence cases occurred in the form of battery (25 cases), 29 percent was assault with a knife (11 cases).
The male aggressors were aged between 23 to 88 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 17 to 87.
Most cases were reported from Adana and Sakarya. Battery/Assault cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (6), Afyon, Aksaray, Ankara, Antalya, Aydın, Bursa, Çorum (3), Edirne, Giresun (2), İstanbul (2), İzmir (3), Kayseri (2), Kocaeli, Konya (2), Maraş, Sakarya (6), Samsun, Tekirdağ and Trabzon.
Harassment
In December, 39 sexual harassment cases appeared on the media across Turkey. 66.6 percent of victims were teenager girls.
74 percent of the harassment cases took place in the form of physical harassment (29 cases) and 20 percent by blackmail (8 cases). While one woman was harassed verbally, another woman was harassed by being stalked and threatened.
Harassment venues were as follows: School (12), on the street (12), online (8), bus (4), apartment (2), office (1).
53.8 percent of the women (21 cases) were harassed by men they didn’t know and 28.2 by their teacher (11 cases). Other perpetrators included boss (2), acquaintance/friend (2), father (1), ex-husband (1), shuttle driver (1).
The male harassers were aged between 38 to 59 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 10 to 54.
Sexual harassment incidents were reported in the following cities: Adana (3), Adıyaman (7), Antalya (4), Isparta, İstanbul (13), Kocaeli, Konya (3), Sakarya, Tekirdağ, Trabzon (3), Urfa and Zonguldak.
Regional distribution
In December 2014, 119 cases of male violence, murder, attempted murder, harassment, sexual violence, rape and battery were reported across 34 provinces across Turkey.
119 incidents were distributed according to regions as follows: Marmara (34), Aegean (12), Mediterranean (24), Black Sea (16), Eastern-Anatolia (4), Central Anatolia (16) and South-Eastern Anatolia (9). (ÇT/BM)
