According to the news compiled by bianet from local and national newspapers, news websites and agencies, men killed at least 20 women and three men who were with the women in September 2020. Men also raped 19 women in Turkey last month.

The deaths of at least 20 women (in Adana (1), Ankara (1), Antalya (1), Antep (1), Aydın (1), Batman (3), Burdur (1), Diyarbakır (1), Gümüşhane (1), İstanbul (4), Samsun (2), Trabzon (1), Van (1), Zonguldak (1)) were reported in the news as suspicious in September.
Men also attempted to kill one woman in Bursa in September 2020. The death of one woman from Georgia in İstanbul and the death of one woman from Syria in Adana were reported in the news as "unidentified murders."
Two women also used their right of self-defense in Adana and Bursa.
2019-2020 Male Violence In the first nine months of 2019, men killed at least 261 women, raped 40 women, forced 400 women to sex work, harassed 165 women and abused 184 children. The men's "excuses" for killing 12 women were not reported in the press. Men killed three women "because they wanted divorce/break up" or "did not want to make up", one woman "out of jealousy", two women in a "dispute over land", one woman due to "inheritance" and they killed one woman "because she swore at his mother."
45 percent of male perpetrators were husbands or ex-husbands
In September, nine women were killed by their husbands/ex-husbands, four women by their lovers, one woman by her son-in-law, one woman by her three male relatives and two women were killed by their neighbors. The relation/acquaintance between three women and the men who killed them was not reported in the press.
Men killed eight women inside the home and eight women in public places such as a forestland, car, hairdresser's shop and street. The places where men killed four women were not reported in the news.
Men killed over half of the women with firearms
Men killed 13 women with firearms, six women with sharp objects such as knives, axes and glass and one woman by strangling her.
Judicial process There were at least 23 perpetrators who killed women. Five perpetrators were arrested and nine perpetrators were taken into custody. At least seven perpetrators committed suicide. Previously committed feminicides reported in the press in September It was understood in September that Zeynep S. (29), who went missing in Adana 7 years ago, was strangled to death with a pillow by a man named E.Y. who wanted to be with her. He took the woman's dead body to a forestland afterwards. Murder of children - Violence against children

The relations/acquaintance between two children and perpetrators was not reported in the press. One of the killed children was from Syria and one was from Afghanistan.
One child was attempted to be kidnapped in Antep, one child was kidnapped in Sakarya. The deaths of at least five children were reported in the press as "suspicious"; while one of these suspicious deaths was in Balıkesir, two were in İzmir, one in Ordu and one in Zonguldak. One father drove his daughter to commit suicide in İzmir.
A father battered his child in a park in İzmir. A 17-year-old child and her "child" were reported in the news as missing in Sakarya.
Peer violence/abuse: A boy whose age was not reported in the press stabbed his 13-year-old "wife of religious marriage" B.S. in Sakarya. It was reported that the boy had threatened the girl many times before.

Rape
Men raped at least 19 women in September 2020. This number was three in the same month last year.
One woman was raped by her lover, one woman by her ex-lover, one woman by local administrators, one woman by a man who introduced himself as a "hodja", one woman by an academic, one woman by four male strangers, one woman by a caregiver and one woman was raped by the owner of a market. 11 women did not know the men who raped them.
One of the women raped by men was from Russia, one was from the UK, one from the Ivory Coast. Two women had mental disabilities while men systematically raped two women.

Judicial process There were 22 perpetrators who raped women. Four perpetrators were arrested, nine perpetrators were taken into custody. A legal action was taken against two perpetrators. No action was taken against two perpetrators, one of whom was a police officer. A lawsuit was filed against one perpetrator. Harassment
Men harassed at least 18 women in September. This figure was 13 in the same month last year.
Women did not know 10 men who harassed them. Two women were harassed by three neighbors, one woman by a courier worker, three women by their manager, one woman by a union employee and one woman by a sports trainer.
Men harassed 14 women verbally, one woman by showing them their sexual organ, at least one woman by stalking them, one woman by shooting photos of them and one woman by shooting videos of them.
Men harassed eight women in places outside the home, such as streets and hospitals, and six women at home. Where men harassed four women was not reported in the press.

Child abuse
Men abused at least 20 children, including boys. This number was 26 in the same month last year. Two children abused by men had mental disabilities.
At least 11 children did not know the men who abused them. One child was abused by their father, one by a religious cult leader, one by a manager, one by a hotel worker, one by a janitor, three by a neighbor, and one by a relative.
Men abused one child at home, one on social media, six in places outside the home, such as streets, a building complex and public transport vehicles. Where men abused 12 children was not reported in the press.

Violence/injury
Men inflicted violence on at least 97 women. This figure was 71 in the same month last year.
Men threatened at least two women with "death" and one woman with spreading their naked photographs. Men had been systematically inflicting violence on at least four women.
One of the women who was subjected to violence by men was a trans sex worker and three women had mental disabilities. One woman was a citizen of Syria, one was of Mongolia and one was of Azerbaijan.
Four women who were subjected to violence by men were hospitalized in "critical condition." Men inflicted violence on three women despite "restraining" orders. One woman had filed a complaint eight times but got no result.

At least 60 women were subjected to violence from their husbands, men they married with an unofficial religious ceremony, and ex-boyfriends. Women did not know 38 men who inflicted violence on them. At least 12 women were subjected to family members such as their fathers, sons and sons-in-law.
Men's "excuses" for inflicting violence on at least 76 women were not reported in the press. Men inflicted violence on at least 10 women because "they wanted to break up" or "they did not want to make peace." Forced to sex work
Men forced at least 59 women to sex work in September. This figure was 33 in the same month last year. There were girls among those who were forced to sex work.

The bianet Male Violence Monitoring Report only covers women who lost their lives as a result of male violence. We do not include any violence cases or crimes that are not gender-based. Throughout the year, we keep track of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths of women in separate monthly tallies but do not add them to the number presented in the headline. At the end of the year, we examine these cases of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths to determine whether the crimes were gender-based. We add the gender-based incidents into the report. We do not include any murders in the reports that are committed by people with psychological disorders (such as murders committed by people with schizophrenia). We include suicide or suicide attempt incidents in the tally only if the woman was subjected to violence/ systematic violence in her past. We cover these suicide incidents in a separate category and do not add suicide cases to the number presented in the headline. In addition, we don't include femicide cases that occur in a mass murder in which the woman was not directly targeted under the condition that the debated incident is not gender based either. Occupations of the offenders only included in the reports when the incident of violence is related to the occupation of the offender. For example, "Woman was murdered at home by his husband, who is a professional soldier." We add the violence committed on children by men, to make the extent of violence visible. |
