Decisions still to be made
Altan Carikci summarized the progress of the commission which will choose the candidates by saying that individual groups were still making internal decisions. After that, shared candidates would emerge.
One name that has been mentioned often is that of Prof. Dr. Baskin Oral, an academic who has become well-known for his outspokenness on minority issues in Turkey.
Candidates will have to be registered with the Supreme Electoral Board by 4 June.
Ballot paper decided on
In a draw by the Supreme Electoral Board, the order of the 17 parties joining the elections has been decided.
The order is as follows:
Enlightenment Turkey Party (ATP), Independent Turkey Party (BTP), Happiness Party (SP), Worker Party (IP), People's Republican Party (CHP), Rise of the People Party (HYP), Freedom and Solidarity Party (ÖDP), Young Party (GP), True Path Party (DYP), Liberal Democrat Party (LDP), Great Unity Party (BBP), Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Justice and Development Party (AKP), Rights and Freedoms Party (HÖP), Motherland Party (ANAP), Labour Party (EP), Turkey Communist Party (TKP).
The parties are listed with their emblems next to them.
Several parties have withdrawn from the elections in order to field independent candidates. These are the Democratic Society Party (DTP), the Freedom and Change Party (HDP), and the Social Democratic Populist Party (SHP).
The DYP, which has planned to unite with ANAP, has changed its name to Democratic Party (DP) since then. It is expected that ANAP will also drop out of the list and join the DP on 2 June. (EÜ/TK/AG/EÜ)
