Turkey’s Media Council (Basın Konseyi) sent a letter to Egypt’s Prime Minister Hazem Al Beblawi, demanding the immediate release of Metin Turan, TRT’s Cairo correspondent who was arrested while reporting anti-military coup protests on August 18.
The letter was submitted to Wafaa Elhaddidy, Egypt’s General Consulate to Istanbul by Media Council Chair Pınar Türenç and Media Council High Board Member Okşan Atasoy who have reminded that Turan was detained along with other journalists in Cairo and kept under very poor conditions in Al Netrun Prison.
“We are worried about Turan’s health condition,” they continued.
‘'Our colleague journalist Metin Turan has been detained by the police as he was performing his profession. Even though journalists from other nations have been released already, he is still captivity for the past 3 months.
“We are asking your prime minister to support and assist us regarding our campaign for the immediate release of our colleague and we are demanding this on behalf of all journalists. In addition to that, Metin Turan had a baby only 10 days ago. We are wishing to see him along with his family as soon as he can.”
What happened?
On August 19, Turan was detained the day after refuging along with 700 hundred protestors in Al-Fattah Mosque in Cairo during “Day of Rage” protests to run away from spree shooting. (EA/BM)
