“Death comes to my mind unexpectedly, I am hugging a tree’s body,” wrote poet Cemal Süreya.
Sometimes you need to hug a tree...to save it.
This country’s people are struggling to save Taksim Gezi Park from destruction. Taksim is being destroyed piece by piece.
Trees are being perished for centuries. Capitalism regards green spots as an opportunity for investment. It is really not easy to protect these areas.
One of the most efficient means of struggle is “hugging a tree”.
The first action dates back to 1730, where 360 people in India came together to prevent the construction of a palace in the woods of their village.
This struggle method has been re-used in different places and under different circumstances.
In one of those, on 10 December 1997, a protestor climbed up a tree and stayed until 18 December 1997. That tree is still alive.
Today, they are attacking our living zones to build malls, hydroelectric power plant, bridges.
These attack are not limited to Taksim Gezi Park, they are everywhere. You can support the movement by hugging a tree nearby even if you don’t have the chance to be in Taksim Gezi Park nowadays.
bianet staff is calling for “Hug a tree” action. Hug them, so they won’t be cut.
