RedHack, a Turkey based hacker group that digitally invaded severally official websites including the ones of Religious Affairs Council, Interior Ministry and Turkish Airlines, hacked the "online data sharing portal" of Turkey's Higher Education Council this morning, leaking thousands of cables related to corruption investigations in universities.
"The cables include corruption investigations in Giresun, İstanbul, Hacettepe, Adnan Menderes and Uludağ Universities. We will keep on releasing more," the hacker group said.
Some of the cables included facts about the land sale plans in Ataturk Orman Ciftligi, an Ankara park established by the order of Mustafa Kemal, Turkey's first president; transaction details of the money transfers between Uludag University and a private bank; and a sum of roughly 700.000 euros unaccounted by Istanbul University.
Hacking the website ebys.yok.gov.tr, RedHack members shared photos of 8 mine workers who lost their lives in a mine accident yesterday and journalist Metin Göktepe whose 17th death anniversary due to police detention brutality coincided today. The group also banner on the website that said "All universities in Turkey, especially METU, will prevail attacks from AKP government".
The group also sent a tweet commemorating Metin Göktepe and yesterday's deceased mine workers. The hashtag created by the group (REDHACKvsYÖK) became the most popular topic in Turkey and fourth most popular in the world.
As of 5:30pm (GMT+2) today, the higher education website at ebys.yok.gov.tr was still unavailable.
