Fearing that their bosporus campus might soon be transformed into a hotel complex, a group of Galatasaray University students launched a petition demanding a preservation guarantee from the Tourism Ministry.
Rumors spread throughout last night that ruined campus might be transformed into a hotel complex.
A group of Galatasaray University students launched an online petition on change.org which demanded Tourism Ministry a promise that their campus will be restored to its original as soon as possible.
The fire, which set around 7:30pm (GMT+2) last night, gravely damaged the main Camus building housing administrative bodies and faculty offices.
Some of the highlight from the petition included:
"The historical university building, where I studied for years, is disappearing before my eyes. Rumors already spread online concerning the transformation of my campus into a hotel complex. [...] we don't need to a historian to understand the seriousness of the situation. We live in an age where historical are sacrificed through fires so that they can be profitable. [...] I, aforementioned, demand an immediate statement from Tourism Ministry and Galatasaray University Administration informing the public and promising that our Camus will be restored to its original, to its original purpose.
Another student group announced via twitter a gathering on Galatasaray University campus at 3pm this afternoon to raise concerns on the issue. (NV)
