Hours after Russia helped the two countries declare ceasefire, the clash between Georgian army and the Southern Ossetian militants fighting for independence started again.
According to the news received last night (August 7), the Georgian army attacked the town of Tskhinvali controlled by the Ossetian militants with tanks and planes. Georgian government described its goal as to stop the criminal attempt and establish order.
According to BBC, at least 15 people have been killed in the fighting so far. Moscow called upon the international community to “prevent mass killings.”
Therefore, the United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting. According to BBC, hundreds of people are on their way to the region from Russia and Abkhazya, another country in Georgia fighting for independence.
Georgia is blaming Russia for providing Southern Osettia with weapons. Moscow is rejecting the allegations.
Traditionally Osettians have been on good terms with Russia. Northern Osettia is part of the Russian Federation. On the other hand, Russia is against the Georgian attempts to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). (EÜ/EZÖ)
