Ramazan Akyürek, former Chamber of Intelligence Chairman, has been detained in Ankara within the murder investigation of Hrant Dink - editor-in-chief of Armenian-language newspaper Agos in Istanbul.
Acording to Hürriyet newspaper, Akyürek has been detained in Ankara within Hrant Dink murder investigation by the order of prosecutor Gökalp Kökçü.
In October 2014, Akyürek was order to testify by the case prosecutor. In his statement, Akyürek allegedly admitted he didn’t share the information to Trabzon Province Governor and other police authorities regarding that certain groups were planning to plot sensational murder plot against Hrant Dink.
Who is Ramazan Akyürek?
In 2004, Akyürek was the police commissioner in Trabzon province.
In 2007, the year when Dink was murdered, Akyürek served as Chamber of Intelligence Chairman. Dink’s advocates requested the trial of Akyürek in suspicion that he might not provide intelligence between Istanbul and Trabzon - the city that the murder took place and killer fled to respectively.
On the hearing that took place on December 3, 2013, defendant Erhan Tuncel claimed that “the murder was the work of Ramazan Akyürek and his gang”. However, Akyürek didn’t face any trial.
In 2012, Akyürek was promoted to Police Authorities Inspection Council. During Turkey’s Corruption Probe in late 2013, he was decommissioned. (NV/BM)
