Following German citizen writer and rights advocate Doğan Akhanlı being detained in Spain upon Turkey’s demand, Interpol’s field of operation and “misuse” of Interpol is on the agenda.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel had blamed Turkey for “misusing” the Interpol.
According to a report by Deutsche Welle Türkçe, European Commission Spokesperson Jyrki Katainen said, “We believe that institutions such as Interpol mustn’t be misused in attempts to detain critical writers against regime”.
The politicians from Germany made a call that Interpol needs to undergo a chance in terms of its operations.
Detained on August 18 in Granada in Spain through “red notice” issued by Interpol upon Turkey’s request, Doğan Akhanlı was released on probation on August 20. Akhanlı is not allowed to leave Spain until his extradition procedures are completed. (BK/TK)
