Disagreement Among Independent Candidates
Despite the attempts of groups of the left and the pro-Kurdish DTP to collaborate in choosing candidates in the major cities in Turkey which do not have a Kurdish majority, disagreements have emerged. The DTP has withdrawn support from several candidates
On 4 June, the Democratic Society Party (DTP) announced that it would support a DTP district party leader, Dogan Erbas, as a candidate in Istanbul's second constituency (the European side of the city), rather than Prof. Dr. Baskin Oran, as previously agreed.
Similarly, the party has changed its candidate for the first constituency in Ankara from Dr. Metin Bakkalci to Sükrü Erbas. The justification for these last-minute changes was "demands made by the people".
While Oran has declared that he will continue his candidacy, Bakkalci has not become a candidate.
There have been changes in the candidates supported by the DTP in several other cities, too. (TK/AG/EÜ)
