The Constitutional Court (AYM) will discuss the application of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) for the statute that grants muftis authority to perform marriage to be revoked and its execution to be suspended.
Making the initial examination of the application, the court not finding any deficiency in the application decided to discuss the application.
Revoke of the statute will be addressed on a day to be decided in the future, and the demand that the execution be suspended will be concluded during the examination of the application.
It went into effect in December
The statute that grants district and provincial office of mufti authority to perform marriage was published on the Official Gazette on December 2, 2017.
On November 15, 2017, Bismil Mufti Ahmet Durmuş performed a marriage in Turkey’s southeastern Diyarbakır’s Bismil Municipality to which political trustee was appointed, and the next day Ministry of Religious Affairs issued a written statement and said that the muftis weren’t granted the authority yet.
The first official mufti marriage was performed by Güzelbahçe Mufti in İzmir following the statute coming into effect in December.
