Celebrations which were promoted for days before in TV channels included folklore concerts, parades accompanied by rock music and many other happenings, taking place for the first time.
The first change started in the mausoleum of Ataturk on August 30, where the high-ranking commanders, led by Chief of Joint Staff, General Hilmi Ozkok were accompanied by a 150-strong civilian group, while walking to the Mausoleum of Ataturk. The group was found out to be the families of martyrs and veterans coming from 81 provinces.
Also going beyond the protocol for the first time, General Ozkok suddenly appeared in front of the stairs leading to the Mausoleum and posed for photographers, together with civilians. As soon as Ozkok and the commanders came out of the Misaki Milli (National Pact) Tower, families of martyrs and veterans burst into applause, to express their gratitude. Upon this unexpected gesture, General Ozkok came close to the families, saying that "You are our everything; I bend before you with respect!" (YE)
