A campaign on Indiegogo has been launched for Lisa Çalan who has lost both legs in the bomb attack on the rally of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) on June 5, 2016.
The campaign which has been initiated under the call; “Bombs Cannot Kill Hope: Lisa should continue making films!” aims at compensating the costs of prosthesis and two months of treatment.
The call of the campaign initiators is as follows:
“Lisa Çalan is a 28 year- old filmmaker. She was at the very beginning of her passion, when a bomb exploded on June 5th, 2015, only two days before the general elections in Turkey, during the rally of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in the city of Diyarbakır and amongst the dead and hundreds wounded, Lisa was severely injured and lost both of her legs.
“An art director and a director at the Middle East Cinema Academy, though after the bombing both of Lisa’s legs were amputated, not only she did not give up living, but also she did not give up hoping and dreaming to make films. For Lisa to continue from where she had left, we need you to listen to her story.
“After Lisa had a series of surgeries and treatments, because of her need for prosthetic limbs were not met by the Turkish government, two weeks ago she left for Germany where the cost of these are half the price, to try her chance for walking again. The period of time needed for Lisa’s body to adapt to the prosthetic limbs was thought to be two months. Luckily, we found out that her muscles and body were already adaptable to the prosthetic limbs and that it could be put on right away. In the meantime we asked if the payments could be done in installments and this was accepted by the the firm. Lisa must be provided with her prosthetic limbs as soon as possible as it is a possibility that if this process is elongated, her muscles may become weaker and the adaptation of her body for the prosthetic limbs can be lost soon.
As Lisa smiles, rivers, oceans flow into ourselves. While we are unhappy with our one piece, complete body, her strength and determination has become hope for us and we have learned a lot from her. Turkey and the world needs women film makers like Lisa whose priority has been social issues. We believe that when Lisa stands up, she will show the way for us and will make a difference and create awareness with what she creates.
The campaign which has managed to collect raise 7,000 dollars so far, aims at 135,000 dollars.
