İstanbul Eyüp Municipality’s ill-treatment against street dogs was protested in front of the municipality yesterday (October 29).
Images of Eyüp Municipality collecting vaccinated and castrated dogs with earring, took place in the media in the previous days.
The animal rights defenders carried banners reading “Streets are living spaces of street animals”, “Resist Paw”, “Where are our losses in the streets?”, “Our call to the President: May Eyüp Mayor be Discharged”.
A street dog barking and howling towards the municipality building caught attention of the people.
Following the demonstration, Eyüp Deputy Mayor Ahmet Turan Koçer making a statement inside the building, refuted the charges. “

In its statement to Hürriyet daily newspaper, Eyüp Municipality said “only 29 dogs were collected and sent to Kısırkaya shelter for rabies vaccine, sterilization and their rings to be renewed”.
Kemerburgaz Mithatpaşa neighborhood mukhtar (chief) Gürkan Yılmaz in his Facebook post thanked the municipality for collecting dogs and addressing the animal rights defenders said, “No one must think that we will be scared of 3-5 people”.
Republican People’s Party (CHP) İstanbul MP Selina Doğan had submitted a parliamentary inquiry concerning the matter.
It is against the law
The street dogs are left back to the streets after being vaccinated and having their rings replaced. According to Law on Protecting Animals Article No. 5199, collecting a dog with a ring is against the law. (ÇT/TK)
