On June 20 World Refugee Day, Support to Life stated that Turkey needs to promise education, means of living, a new future in addition to security and health to the Syrians in Turkey.
Two generations will grow away from their country
The experts estimate that it would take 15-20 years to re-build infrastructure in Syria even if the war ended today. What makes this stat more striking is that the wars last approximately 17 years.
Given that many Syrians have been living abroad for seven years, one can foresee that at least two more generations will grow away from their country.
When asked of their needs, 93% of the Syrian refugees say that they want to learn Turkish and 73% want to receive occupational training.
9.7% of the Syrians are university graduates
According to a report by Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, 9.7% of the Syrians in Turkey are university graduates. The rate in Turkish citizens is 11%.
If we recall for purpose of comparison that the rate of people of Turkish origin living in Germany who are university graduates is 1.7%, It is clear as a day that the Syrian refugees in our country are not lacking any capacity of producing economic value. There is no reason for Turkey to not turn it into an opportunity. (NV/TK)
