As part of its University Impact Rankings, the UK-based Times Higher Education has produced a ranking which focuses on how universities across the world are contributing to gender equality.
As part of the ranking, a series of measures are looked at, including research on gender, policies on gender equality, their commitment to recruiting and promoting women and proportion of first-generation female students.
Accordingly, the top five universities of the world in terms of tackling gender equality have been listed as follows:
Western Sydney University (Australia), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (the Netherlands), University of Gothenburg (Sweden), University of Bologna (Italy) and University of Worcester (the United Kingdom).
Six universities from Turkey among top 100 universities
Six universities from Turkey have also been listed among the top 100 universities from around the world for tackling gender equality.
Accordingly, Koç University in İstanbul has ranked 46th, Hacettepe University in Ankara has ranked 52nd, Boğaziçi University in İstanbul has ranked 61st, Ankara University has ranked 76th, Kadir Has University in İstanbul has ranked 93rd and, lastly, Özyeğin University in İstanbul has ranked 95th.
Western Sydney University on top for 14 years
Western Sydney University, which has been the first university for contributing to gender equality, has been holding this title for 14 years.
In addition to the measures taken by the university to combat sexual violence on campus, its "Gender Equality Strategy and Action Plan 2015-2020" has also been a determining factor for this ranking. Focusing on the areas where gender equality can be improved, this plan aims to "support the university's efforts in recruiting, retaining and helping female staff advance."
