According to Statistics Institute of Turkey (TÜİK), sexual assault crimes have climbed by 30 percent in the past 5 years.
409 state officials including policemen, soldiers, specials ops troops, village guard or guardians charged with rape in the past 15 years left unpunished.
According to Jin News Agency, a compilation of statistics from TÜİK, Justice Ministry, Interior Ministry, Police authorities and Gendarmerie revealed the following results:
* In the past 15 years, 241 policemen, 91 soldiers, 17 specials ops troops, 15 village guards, 45 prison guards have stood trial for rape charges. None of them received a sentence.
* 50 percent of rape victims are under 18 years old with 90 percent being teenager girls and 10 percent teenager boys.
* Women who call hot lines complain the following situations: Physical violence (57 percent), sexual violence (46.9 percent), incest (14.6 percent) and rape (8.6 percent).
55 percent of children become victim of incest
* 55 percent of children between 5–10 years old have been reported as incest victims.
* 40 percent of children between 10–16 years old have been reported as incest victims.
Aggressors are acquaintances
* 75 percent of sexual aggressor know their victims.
* 50 percent of incest cases are perpetrated by biological fathers. Other actors include uncles, brothers, grandfathers.
* 83 percent of women abusers turn out to be women’s husbands.
Male violence cases hike every year
* Between 2002 and 2008, 62,000 rape cases have been reported. While only 66 women were murdered in 2002, the toll rose to 1011 in 2007.
* Rape cases according to years are as follows: 528 in 2006, 473 in 2007, 577 in 2008, 652 in 2009. Sexual harassment cases according to years are as follows: 489 in 2006, 540 in 2007, 589 in 2008, 624 in 2009.
* According to statistics from police authorities and Gendarmerie, 226 women were murdered, 478 raped, 722 sexually harassed and 6423 battered due to domestic violence in the first 7 months of 2010.
* Between 2005 and 2010, over 100,000 were subjected to sexual assaults with an estimate of 40 percent not filing an official complaint. Fear was listed as one of the most prominent reasons for remaining silent.
According to a compilation made by bianet from various news websites and agencies, male perpetrated violence left 97 women killed, 97 raped, 127 injured and 110 sexually harassed. (ÇT/BM)
